About Me

Taryn Kail: Artist, Punch Needle Rug Hooking Artist and Instructor

I’m Taryn Kail, a Houston-based fiber artist and Oxford Certified Instructor. Inspired by the flora and fauna of Texas, I create fiber art with natural materials such as locally milled rug yarn, 100% wool strips sourced from local wool and rug shops, specialty rug-making yarns, and fibers sourced from nearby ranches and fellow rug makers in America and Canada who make or dye rug yarn specifically for this craft.

Three decades in digital design and front-end development have shaped my appreciation for creative problem-solving and precise execution. I found the ideal expression of those strengths in punch needle rug hooking, the medium I now consider my artistic home. I enjoy teaching what I know and learning from fellow craftsmen in the rug making community. Fiber artists and crafters are my favorite people.

Why I love working with wool.

My connection to wool extends across its entire journey, from the animals and ranchers who provide the fiber to the artisans who mill, spin, and dye it into yarn and fabric. Although I have worked in many forms of commercial and fine art, no other material has captivated me as deeply as wool, with its vivid colors and rich textures.

From Pattern to Finished Work

Once a pattern is complete, I create a transfer stencil for primitive linen or cotton monk’s cloth. Using an Oxford Punch Needle designed for rug hooking, I carefully place every loop of rug yarn or strip of wool. Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, the work may take days, weeks, or even months. The prices of my original artwork reflect this investment of time and attention, which is also why I accept commissions only rarely.

Where to find my work.

At select vendor events, I offer reproduction patterns, prints, kits, and smaller pieces at accessible price points. Many are practical, gift-ready items created with fairgoers and shoppers in mind. My larger original rugs and wall hangings are more often exhibited and sold in gallery settings or occasionally through my supply shop "Inner Loop Punch Needle Rug Hooking Pattern and Supply Co."

I am also currently displaying work for sale at Helotes Gallery located in Helotes, Texas.

Patterns for Rug Makers

After completing an original piece, I often make its transfer stencil available as a pattern so fellow rug makers can create their own interpretation. These designs are available through my shop, “Inner Loop Punch Needle Rug Hooking Pattern & Supply.”

Teaching

As an Oxford Certified Instructor, I bring punch needle rug hooking into my community through foundational and advanced instruction. My goal is to help students understand their tools and materials, build confidence through practice, and use the craft to explore creativity, culture, and personal joy.
